The Vatican vs. Gertrude Stein (Part I)

THE VATICAN: The invasion and conquest of the Americas, which resulted in the deaths of nearly 90 percent of the indigenous population, offered the natives the chance to know and welcome Christ, the unknown God whom their ancestors were seeking (without realizing it) in their rich religious traditions. Christ is the Saviour for whom they were silently longing. The proclamation of Jesus and of his Gospel did not at any point involve an alienation of the pre-Columbian cultures, nor was it the imposition of a foreign culture.

GERTRUDE STEIN: There is no pope.

There is a pope, Ms. Stein, but no God... THAT is the problem.

Hmmmm, the Catholic logic here sounds suspiciously familiar. Substitute a few words and one could have a close approximation of the Bush mindset vis-a-vis the Islamic nations of the Middle East. Certainly his supporters in the "Christian Right" feel this way. They routinely display a "what's a few Iraqis for the glory of Christ" mentality.
